Memorial Chapel • Burghclere

The chapel was built in the 1920s to house a series of paintings by war artist Stanley Spencer.

The series of 17 paintings were inspired by Spencer's experiences during the First World War.

Initially he volunteered as an orderly with the Royal Army Medical Corp and was based at Beaufort War Hospital in Bristol.  He was then sent to Macedonia. While here he transferred to the Infantry and joined 7th Battalion Berkshire Regiment. He would spend two and a half years involved in the Salonika Campaign before being invalided out of service following a bout of malaria.

The series of paintings held at Sandham were completed in 1932.

The memorial chapel is now cared for by the National Trust and is open seasonally.

In the garden is a small memorial to the Salonika Campaign.
